Airfield Lighting

Olex manufactures a range of high voltage (primary) and low voltage (secondary) cable designs for airfield (runway) lighting applications.

Primary cables are exclusively manufactured as single core designs and are rated for operation at either 3000V or 5000V. Conductor sizes are usually 6mm2 or 8mm2 with some form of conductor screening. The insulation Is normally specified as XLPE, which provides excellent electrical properties. The insulated core designs are either screened (shielded) overall or unscreened depending on the location, installation design and degree of lightning protection required. Overall sheathing (jacketing), which is always specified for screened designs, employs materials that are selected for a range of reasons, including its ability to provide good bonding to moulded connection devices and to providing termite resistance.

Low voltage or secondary cables are two conductor designs for connection from transformers to light fittings. The Australian specification nominates 2.5mm2 conductors in a figure 8 profile and specifies that this cable also be protected from ground termites by a layer of extruded nylon.

Airfield lighting cables are manufactured to Australian, New Zealand and International standards. In Australia, the Department of Aviation specification YSVE4005 is preferred. In New Zealand, the Airways Corporation of NZ specification ACNZ/PSEQ/CAB-01 is preferred. Pacific and Asian regions generally refer to the US Department of Transportation Advisory Circular AC150/5345-7E (L-824) specification.
