Versolex shines at Commonwealth Games

26 Mar 2006

Melbourne manufactured Versolex cable played a critical role in the spectacular opening ceremony of XVIII Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Tens of thousands of spectators lined the banks of the iconic Yarra River, while millions more tuned in around the world, to watch the Melbourne night sky erupt in a sea of colourful lights and fireworks.

One of the highlights of the opening ceremony was the impressive display of giant fish positioned along the Yarra River. The 72 metallic fish, which were connected together by large pontoons, were lit up with a myriad of different colours and spurted water from their tops to create a visually memorable display on the river.

In order for this element of the opening ceremony to work, the cable required called for specific design functionality, and one which Olex could provide.

Approximately 10.5km of Versolex 16mm2 4 core and earth, plus three other Versolex product lines, were used to create the 800m light and water extravaganza.

Olex worked closely with the M2006 Technical Directors Team for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies during the specification phase to ensure that the cable design met the requirements of the project. Specifically, the cable needed to be flexible and submersible as it was to be run under water along the Yarra River and back to distribution boards along the banks.

Versolex was the perfect option for organisers to use. In addition to meeting the cable design criteria for this project the cable is made in Melbourne and could therefore provide a home grown product for this world class event.

The fish also formed part of a nightly show along the Yarra River throughout the 10 days of the Commonwealth Games.
